West Lafayette, Ind. - In the most heated rivalry and on the opposition's home turf, the Hoosiers lost the Old Oaken Bucket by a score of 34-10 to the Purdue Boilermakers.
IU seniors led the way in their final campaign donning cream and crimson, passing on the storied tradition of all-out rivalry games against Purdue to a young Hoosier roster. While the 2002 season has been a struggle against injury for IU, every down was played with determination and pride.
Despite a great day by senior defensive lineman Kris Dielman with seven tackles and wide receiver Courtney Roby surpassing the 1,000-yard receiving mark, the Hoosiers could not put together enough total offense to subdue the Boilermakers Saturday evening.
But Saturday was, undeniably, a day for the seniors. Antonio Watson ended his Hoosier career with 59 tackles while Stephen Anthony got IU's lone touchdown from quarterback Tommy Jones. Dielman, a co-captain, stared down a tough Boilermaker offense all day long while offensive lineman and co-captain Enoch Demar led the offensive effort. Gibran Hamdan split time with Jones at quarterback for IU while A.C. Carter came up with a prolific kick return late in the game to give Indiana a renewed sense of Hoosier pride.
Indiana got on the board early with a field goal by Bryan Robertson and did not score again until midway through the fourth quarter when Carter returned a Purdue kickoff 85 yards, setting up a Jones to Anthony touchdown and ensuing point-after kick, making the score 27-10.
