Hoosiers Sweep Purdue

Bloomington, Ind. - A coaching milestone, a season sweep of Purdue, a point for Indiana in the Titan Series, a 20-win season, and another Indiana victory to add to its NCAA Tournament portfolio. With the aforementioned milestones all attainable with a victory in tonight's tilt with the Boilermakers, this wasn't just another volleyball match for the Hoosiers.While lesser teams may have folded under the pressure of an important late-season match with an intrastate rival, Indiana defeated the visiting Boilermakers, 3-0 (30-23, 30-28, 30-24) before 803 spectators at the University Gymnasium this evening.
Junior Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East) recorded nine kills and a .500 hitting percentage, to go along with five block assists. With a match-high 16 kills, Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) moved to within 11 kills of becoming Indiana's single-season kill leader with 540 (Anne Eastman, 539 in 1994). Purdue's Marie Franke and Joanna Lowry, recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the Boilermakers.
"I thought we played very well and we were fortunate to set the tone for the match in the first game," said head coach Katie Weismiller, who with tonight's victory moved into first-place on Indiana's career volleyball coaching victories list with 159 (Ann Lawver, 158 from 1975-82). "Monique Pritz provided us with a nice lift this evening and our defense was sharp throughout the match."
On the evening, Indiana recorded 53 kills to Purdue's 40, notched 12 blocks to the Boilermakers' seven, and outhit Purdue, .221-.121.
In addition to Weismiller's milestone, tonight's victory keeps Indiana in contention for an NCAA Tournament berth, which will be announced at 9:00 p.m. EST on Sunday. The Big Ten Conference is expected to receive anywhere between 5-7 invitations to the tournament and Indiana is in that mix. The Hoosiers host Illinois on Saturday in what amount to another critical match. The tilt with the Fighting Illini is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. EST at the University Gymnasium.
With tonight's victory, Indiana (20-11 overall, 10-9 Big Ten) earned its first 20-win campaign since 1999, when the Hoosiers finished 21-10, including one forfeit victory. Under Weismiller, Indiana also recorded a 20-win season in 1995.
In game one, Indiana raced to a 10-6 lead on a service ace by sophomore Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral). Purdue (12-20 overall, 2-17 Big Ten) scored the next three points but Indiana answered with five consecutive tallies of its own to secure a 15-9 advantage. A kill by senior Hillary Toivonen (Muncie, Ind./Burris) extended the Indiana lead to 20-12 and the Boilermakers never got closer than five points, 22-17, on a kill by Franke. Indiana closed out the first game on a kill by Archibald.
The second game was much more tightly contested as the two teams were knotted at 15-15. Purdue grabbed a 17-15 lead on a kill by Tiffany Yoskey but Indiana answered to again tie the game, 17-17. Purdue led 21-19 but could not maintain its advantage as the Hoosiers tied the game at 23. Indiana scored the game's next three points, taking a 26-23 advantage on an attacking error by Kim McConaha. Purdue did close to within, 29-28, yet a Pollom kill closed out the match, 30-28.
Indiana trailed 17-14 in game three but tied the match, 17-17, on a service ace by junior Nikki Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central). With the game tied, 24-24, Indiana rattled off six consecutive points, the final and match-deciding point on an attack error by Purdue's Kim Cappa.
