BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Three Indiana soccer players were selected All-Americans, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Thursday afternoon. Seniors Pat Noonan and John Swann garnered first-team honors while sophomore Ned Grabavoy made the second team. In addition, Noonan is the runner-up for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, which honors the nation's best college soccer player. Virginia's Alecko Eskandarian, who scored 54 points on 25 goals and four assists this season, won the award, edging Noonan by just four points.
Since the program's elevation to varsity status in 1973, Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley has mentored 27 players who have earned All-America honors a total of 48 times.
Noonan finishes his career at Indiana as a three-time All-American, including earning first-team accolades in both 2001 and 2002. A co-captain this season, he scored 37 points on 14 goals and nine assists. He was selected the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year in both 2001 and 2002 and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors three times during his career. The Ballwin, Mo., and DeSmet Jesuit High School product became just the 14th player in Indiana soccer history to score 100 points in a career. Noonan leaves Indiana with 127 career points, which ranks sixth all-time. In the Indiana records books, e is also seventh with 48 goals, 12th with 31 assists and second with 324 shots. Noonan played on Indiana's 1999 National Championship team and competed in three College Cups for the Hoosiers. He started every game in his career at IU and is the only three-time All-American on this year's All-America team.
Up until this season, the Missouri Athletic Club and Hermann Trophy presented separate awards to collegiate soccer's national player of the year. For the first time ever in 2002, the two combined to honor one consensus winner. As a junior in 2001, Noonan was the runner-up for the Missouri Athletic Club's Player of the Year award and was among the 15 finalists for the Hermann.
Swann, a team co-captain along with Noonan, is one of three defenders on the first team and is an All-American for the first time in his career. The Brownsburg, Ind., and Browsburg High School product anchored a Hoosier defense that ranked 14th nationally with an 0.77 goal-against average and recorded eight shutouts. Swann was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection and a first-team All-Great Lakes Region pick in 2002. In addition, he was a two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic Defensive MVP, and made the All-Tournament team at the Butler Soccer Fest and the Big Ten Tournament. Swann closes his career at IU having scored 10 goals from his defense position. He also played on IU's 1999 title team and in three College Cups. Grabavoy, a midfielder, is one of only four underclassmen on either the first or second team. The New Lenox, Ill., native was the Hoosiers' third-leading scorer with 20 points on six goals and eight assists this season. His 15 points in conference matches led all Big Ten players. Grabavoy, who was the NSCAA's National High School Player of the Year in 2000, also earned first-team All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region accolades. He was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13 and was also selected to the College Soccer News and Soccer America National Teams of the Week during the regular season. Grabavoy is a member of the United States Under-20 team.
The trio helped the Hoosiers to a 15-4-2 record and their seventh consecutive Big Ten Conference regular season championship in 2002. Indiana is the most-represented school on the three All-America teams with three selections.
