Weismiller Inks Contract Extension

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana University Interim Director of Athletics J. Terry Clapacs today announced that head volleyball coach Katie Weismiller has agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension that is expected to keep her in Bloomington through at least the 2005 volleyball season. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed."Throughout her tenure, Katie has proven that she is the right person to lead our volleyball program," said Clapacs. "Her energy, enthusiasm, and loyalty to the Indiana University volleyball program, coupled with a strong commitment to the academic success of the program's student-athletes, has led to Indiana's emerging presence on the national volleyball scene. Under Katie's direction, we expect Indiana to be among the elite volleyball programs in the Big Ten Conference."
Upon her hiring at Indiana in 1993, Weismiller inherited a team that had compiled only a 6-23 record during the season prior to her arrival. In just her third season, she led Indiana to its first NCAA tournament appearance in school history. This past season, despite having only one senior on the roster, Indiana recorded its third NCAA tournament appearance in the last five years.
"I appreciate the tremendous support that Indiana University and the athletic administration is providing our volleyball program," said Weismiller. "With such a young team this fall, I was pleased with our effort and the results of this season, which included an NCAA tournament invitation. We are confident that the tremendous young women we have in our program will propel this program to even greater accomplishments in years to come."
In 2002, Weismiller, along with assistants Cydryce Carter and Ryan Theis, led Indiana to a 20-13 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the Big Ten Conference, which along with the Pac-10 is widely regarded as one of the two toughest leagues in the country. The Hoosiers set school records in single-season kills (2,101), assists (1,920), and block assists (560).
Junior middle blocker Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) paced the Hoosiers this past season as she earned All-Big Ten and All-Mideast Region accolades, in addition to being recognized as a Verizon Academic All-District selection. She was joined on the All-Big Ten team by honorable mention selections Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) and Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral), both of whom were sophomores in 2002. Archibald set Indiana's single season kills record with 555, while Brewer and Pollom placed fourth and seventh on Indiana's single-season kills list, respectively. Yet another sophomore, Victoria Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) set Indiana's single-season assist record with 1,765.
In addition to their on-court success, nine Indiana volleyball players earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in 2002, tying Michigan State and Penn State with the most selections in the league.
Prior to her tenure at Indiana, Weismiller spent two seasons (1989-90) as the head volleyball coach at Saint Louis University. From 1991-92, she was an assistant coach at the University of Florida. She helped lead the Gators to the school's first ever NCAA Final Four appearance in her first season at the school.
A St. Louis native, Weismiller played collegiate volleyball at the University of Texas-Arlington from 1983-86. She was inducted into the UTA Hall of Fame in 2001.
