Wright Named Big Ten POW

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana freshman guard Bracey Wright is the Big Ten Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 1, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The 6-3 guard has led IU to a 4-0 start, highlighted by the EA Sports Maui Invitational championship. He is the first Hoosier freshman to receive the Big Ten's top weekly honor since Luke Recker on Jan. 19, 1998.Wright averaged nearly 16 points per game at the EA Sports Maui Invitational, leading his team to the title while earning MVP honors in the process. He is the first freshman to receive this award since North Carolina's Joseph Forte in 1998. He is the first IU freshman since Calbert Cheaney to score in double figures in his first four collegiate games (Cheaney opened his career with 13 such outings in 1989-90). The 6-3 guard is also the first IU freshman since Luke Recker to post consecutive 20-point outings. Wright tied his career-high with 21 points against North Texas on Dec. 1. Recker tallied 22 at Northwestern (Jan. 14, 1998) and 27 against No. 12 Purdue (Jan. 18, 1998). Wright enters Tuesday's game with No. 11 Maryland having made his last 13 consecutive free throws.
