BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University has suspended head basketball coach Mike Davis one game for his actions at the end of the Dec. 21 Indiana-Kentucky game at Freedom Hall. The Big Ten Conference has issued Coach Davis a public reprimand. He also will write a letter of apology to the three officials who worked the game.Coach Davis will sit out the Hoosiers' Dec. 31 game at Ball State. IU Associate Head Coach John Treloar will direct the Hoosiers against the Cardinals.
The Big Ten Conference notified Indiana University Dec. 23 that it believed Coach Davis was in violation of the league's sportslike conduct agreement and asked the university to respond. IU responded on Dec. 27, recommending to the league office that Coach Davis be issued a public reprimand, a one-game suspension, and write a letter of apology to the officials. The Big Ten announced today that it concurred with the university's recommended sanctions.
"We appreciate the careful consideration that the Big Ten has given to this matter," IU Interim Athletics Director Terry Clapacs said. "I am fully supportive of Mike and the job he is doing for his team and for Indiana University.
"I've discussed this matter with Mike over the past few days, and I know he is genuinely sorry for his actions during the Indiana-Kentucky game. Mike's actions at the end of the game occurred because of his intensity at the moment and are not representative of the person I have come to know over the years."
According to Big Ten rules, the one-game suspension allows Coach Davis to conduct practice sessions leading up to the game, but he cannot have any form of communication with the players or coaching staff starting two hours before the game and ending two hours after the game. In addition, he cannot be present in the playing venue.
After the Ball State game, Indiana hosts Charlotte on Jan. 4 before Penn State visits Bloomington in the Jan. 8 Big Ten Conference opener.
