Muncie, Ind. - Looking to snap a two-game losing skid in front of a soldout, 11,500 crowd, the Hoosiers rolled into Muncie, Ind. Dec. 31, New Year's Eve, and ran away with a 76-62 victory over the Ball State Cardinals. Indiana extended its record to 9-2 on the season as Ball State fell to 5-5 for the year. Freshman Bracey Wright recorded his 11th-straight double-digit effort, turning in a 31-point performance. His 31 points ties his career-high set against Vanderbilt on Dec. 9, 2002. 21 of Wright's 31 points came in the second half while the only other freshman in IU history to record two 30-plus performances was A.J. Guyton in 1996-97 with two 31-point games.
While Wright led the Hoosiers in scoring, Jeff Newton led all Hoosiers with 10 rebounds and added 11 points, adding to his season total of double-doubles as he now has seven on the year.
Tom Coverdale moved past Calbert Cheaney into fourth place on the all-time three-pointers list with two baskets from beyond the arc against Ball State. He now boasts 150 career treys and is only the fourth Hoosier in IU's storied history to hit the 150 three-point mark.
Senior Kyle Hornsby added 14 points, tying a season-high and four assists to the IU effort, while Coverdale chipped in 10 points.
The Hoosiers enjoy the turning of the New Year, closing out the pre-conference portion of their schedule Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 against Charlotte.
