Coverdale Is Big Ten Co-POW

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana senior guard Tom Coverdale is the Big Ten Conference Co-Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 8, the league office announced on Monday morning. Coverdale shares the honor with Illinois forward Brian Cook.This is the second straight week that an IU player has won the Big Ten's top regular season honor, as Bracey Wright was the Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 1. The last time that IU players won back-to-back Big Ten Player of the Week laurels was Jan. 12 and Jan. 19, 1998. Charlie Miller won it on Jan. 12 and Luke Recker shared the honor with former Michigan State All-American Mateen Cleaves on Jan. 19, 1998.
No individual has been more valuable to their team than Coverdale has been to the Hoosiers. The Wooden and Senior CLASS Award candidate tied his career-high with 30 points in an 80-74 overtime victory over No. 8 Maryland in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. He fueled the Hoosiers' comeback down the stretch, scoring seven of IU's 14 points in a 14-4 run to close the first half, as well as the Hoosier deficit from 14 to 4. He also had seven points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist ro help Indiana overcome Maryland's 38-27 lead and take a 46-44 advantage with nine minutes remaining. He finished the game 8-of-16 from the floor, 5-of-10 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Most impressively, he played 43 of 45 minutes and had five assists and one turnover. The Hoosiers tied a school record with just four turnovers. He tallied 14 points and five assists in 28 minutes against Illinois-Chicago. Coverdale needs 83 points to become the 37th member of Indiana's 1,000 career point club and 21 assists for 400 in his career. He ranks among the league's top 10 in six statistical categories, and he needs seven three-pointers for 150 in his career. Coverdale is on pace to become the fifth player in school history with 1,000 career points, 400 assists and 150 three-pointers. He has at least five assists in five of IU's six games this year.
The No. 10 Hoosiers are off to their fourth 6-0 start in the last seven years and entertain Vanderbilt tonight at Assembly Hall (7 p.m., ESPN2).
