Bloomington, IN - Off to its fourth 6-0 start in the last seven years, the Indiana Hoosiers are ranked sixth in this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and seventh in the Associated Press poll. This is IU's highest AP ranking since the Hoosiers closed the 1992-93 campaign ranked first in the nation.
Indiana boasts a balanced attack featuring two of the top four scorers in the Big Ten - freshman guard Bracey Wright and senior guard Tom Coverdale (each at 17.2 ppg). Ironically, Wright and Coverdale have each won the last two Big Ten Player of the Week honors, marking the first time since Jan. 12 and 19, 1998, that two Hoosiers won the league's top regular season honor in consecutive weeks. Charlie Miller and Luke Recker were IU's honorees on those dates. Senior forward Jeff Newton has posted double-doubles in each of his last three games, a stretch that has seen him average 18 points and 13 rebounds.
IU puts its unblemished record on the line tonight against 5-1 Vanderbilt (7 p.m., ESPN2). Should the Hoosiers prevail, they would stretch their winning streak to seven games, the best since Dec. 10, 1996, to Jan. 2, 1997, a string of eight straight triumphs.
