Spanos Tabbed as Player of the Week by Big Ten
|
Junior Vasili Spanos was honored by the Big Ten on Monday. |
The River Forest, Ill. native posted a .400 average and pounded three home runs and knocked in seven runs in the four games. Spanos hit a pair of homers and four RBI in a 9-6 win over Valparaiso on Wednesday. He followed that performance with a home run and three RBI in game one of a doubleheader against Detroit Mercy and was walked in six of his 12 plate appearances in the three-game sweep.
Spanos has been instrumental in the Hoosiers’ 12-game winning streak and is among the Big Ten’s elite in numerous categories. He leads the conference with 32 RBI, is tied for the conference lead in home runs with eight, is second in batting with a .452 average and leads the conference in slugging percentage while being second in doubles.
“Having the year to mature really helped Vasili,” said Head Coach Bob Morgan. “He has always been a power hitter and now he is able to take the ball the other way with power. He is getting his pitches and it’s good to see him get honored for his accomplishments. We hope that he continues to have the season he has had so far.”
Spanos and the 16-3 Hoosiers were postponed on Monday due to inclement weather, but are looking to extend their win streak to 13 on Tuesday when they take on Wright State at Sembower Field at 3 p.m.
