Welcome to the diary of Indiana water polo. We left for Villanova University for the Southern Division Championships early Friday morning. As we were boarding the plane in Indianapolis, one of the passengers ahead of us was having his carry on bag randomly searched by the airport security. None of us thought much of it until the security woman pulled something suspicious from his bag. The suspicious something turned out to be a six-inch knife! For some reason the man was still allowed to board the plane. As we were waiting for take off, one of the attendants made an announcement asking for a specific passenger to come to the front of the plane. I happened to look out the window just in time to see the man with the knife and his bag being escorted back into the airport. I think everyone on our flight breathed a sigh of relief!
We got into Philadelphia around early afternoon and ate lunch at Houlihan's in this huge mall in King of Prussia. Needless to say, everyone on the team was starving and we showed it. We checked into the hotel and crashed for a little bit before our first game of the weekend. On the way to Villanova, we couldn't believe some of the houses in the area. They were huge! We beat Villanova in their home pool 19-5. Pretty good way to start off the weekend. After the game, we grabbed a quick bite to eat (again) at a grocery store and went back to crash at the hotel.
It's Saturday morning and we just beat Washington & Jefferson 18-3. After the game, Kirst, Streef, Wanger, Gibler, Junk, and I were waiting outside the pool on the sidewalk when a blue, red, and gold truck with a huge Red Bull statue on the back pulled up. We yelled out to the drivers and asked if they were giving out Red Bull. It was just our luck that they were! So after we got our energy drink, we went to Chili's for some lunch. We surprised Butt by having the waiters bring her a cake and sing to her for her 21st birthday. For the record, she believed. After all, this trip was about business, not pleasure!
On our way to the Michigan game, we were all on our cell phones trying to find out who won the men's Little 500 race. Wanger found out from one of her friends back in Bloomington that SAE had won and Petes told us the Cutters came in eighth. We were all pulling for the Cutters and were happy to hear they finished in the top ten. Go Cutters!
The first half against Michigan was awesome and everyone thought that we were going to win. But things fell apart in the second half, and we ended up losing 11-7. All we want to do is just beat Michigan! So after the game, we went to Unos for some Chicago style pizza and I tried to teach Butt, Kate, and Marley a match trick that Don Gold taught me last week. Unfortunately, all I accomplished was burning my fingers and nearly setting Kate's sweatshirt on fire. By the end of our dinner, the room smelled like sulfur and everyone had mastered the match trick...except for me!
Back to the Hampton Inn to retire for the night. Kirst and I watched the Road Rules/Real World Marathon forever. Better get some sleep though, because we have to be at breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

Our last day in Philly was spent playing for third place against George Washington University. The Colonials came out fighting hard in the first half but in the last two quarters of the game, we dominated and clinched the win 16-7.
Shortly after our game we headed to downtown Philly where we passed through the ghetto dodging flying bullets. (Well, maybe not, but it makes for a good story. You've gotta add some spice!) Fortunately we knew we were back in a safe haven when we saw a Gap Kids store on a corner lot.
We ventured out of our vans determined to find the best Philly cheese steaks downtown had to offer. After about a 40-minute wait, a small group of Hoosiers found that perfect cheese steak. It was at Jim's Steaks, and many of us thought they were better than Pat's, the last cheese steak place we went to during a previous visit to Philly. The people at Jim's served in a much more pleasant manner too.
Scattered in several groups we all found our ways back to the vans and made our final trip to the airport. I must say, the leader of the pack of caravans going to the airport, thought his van, usually the third of three, was not always being treated fairly. The driver in the lead van (the head coach will remain nameless) must have believed that in Pennsylvania, running a red light was legal. I don't want to brag, but the chauffer of van number three escorted us to the Budget lot about 15 minutes before van one or two got there. Way to go van number three!
So it's back home to Bloomington for a week of projects, papers, and finals. We're all looking forward to it! And think, in just a few days, we head back to Philly and then travel to Princeton for Easterns. We won't be coming back with a loss this time...just the hardware.
You think you know, but you have no idea. This is the diary of the Indiana women's water polo team.
