Barry King Live
Indiana Head Coach Barry King: “We get to play top competition from the beginning, so that helps us get into playing hard right away. As it stand right now, we have to go through three of the best five opponents to win the championship. It is going to be a difficult road to travel, but hopefully we are up to the challenge. Obviously, we are looking to play our best water polo of the season; it is a great opportunity to hopefully advance to the NCAA Championships.”
A Senior Day Worth Noting
Indiana's five seniors enjoyed their final home game against Penn State-Behrend two weeks ago, during the CWPA Conference Weekend in Bloomington, Ind.
The Hoosiers' five seniors, Kate McCollum, Melissa Debiasse, Molly Fonner, Louanne Hovater, and Kirsten Mayberry, all wrapped up their playing days in the Counsilmen Billingsley Aquatics Center, with each of the five finding the back of the net in their final match. Debiasse and Hovater each finished the match with career-highs in goals with two and three, respectively. Fonner chipped in four goals on five shots, while McCollum scored on her only opportunity.
Put Me In Coach
The biggest surprise in the Penn State-Behrend game however, may have been the switch made by the Hoosiers at the start of the fourth period. Leading 15-3, Indiana head coach Barry King substituted senior Louanne Hovater into goal and senior Kirsten Mayberry into the field.
Mayberry showed her stuff just over a minute in by scoring her first career goal. She went on to add another scoring on both of her attempts. Hovater returned to the goal where she started her Hoosier career.
"That was something special for Kirsten and Louanne on senior day," King said. "It gave Louanne a chance to get back between the pipes where she started her career, and it also gave Kirsten an opportunity to play the field for the first time collegiately."
"Hail The King"...For His 100th Victory
As the Hoosiers wrapped up a 19-5 victory over Penn State-Behrend in the final match of the CWPA Conference Weekend (April 6-7), Indiana head coach Barry King claimed his 100th victory.
King's Hoosiers won five games over the CWPA Weekend, and since the two club victories this year (Michigan State and Purdue) are not being included in team season stats, the win over the Behrend Lions was officially his 100th victory.
The Hoosier coach laid the foundation for Indiana water polo and is now in his fifth year.
It's a Red and White Issue
Okay, so it's just the cap color that we're talking about. But for the Hoosiers, color is everything. Indiana started off the season losing six straight while wearing their white caps. However, once Indiana was allowed to wear the red caps, victories came quickly.
Currently, Indiana is 10-4 in their red caps, while just 5-8 wearing white.
"I'm Not A Playa', I Just Score A Lot."
Who says when the Hoosiers compete, nobody is watching? Well, the last two months Indiana has been in the water, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) has been paying attention. Three Hoosiers have now earned Player of the Week honors.
Junior Kristin Stanford was awarded the honor the week of March 20 for recording a team high 10 goals on 28 shots in five games over the team's spring break trip (featuring games versus Cal-State Bakersfield, UC-Irvine, LMU, Cal-Baptist and Redlands). The Cincinnati, Ohio native also tallied 10 steals and five assists. She scored three goals each against Cal-Baptist and UC-Irvine and held her opponents scoreless in the two-meter in all games.
Molly Fonner, a senior from Beaverton, Ore., earned the award during the week of February 6-13 for her performance at the UC-San Diego Invitational.
Her teammate, freshman Sharna Nelson, was recognized as the conference's top player one week later. She tallied eight goals on 20 shots with four assists, one steal, and earned five kickouts at the Princeton Invitational.
Welcome to the History Books...
Over Spring Break, junior Kristin Stanford became Indiana University's all-time scoring leader with a career total of 140. The Cincinnati, Ohio native surpassed Deb Simone's 139 career goals to claim the top spot, during the Cal-Baptist game at the LMU Invite, March 16.
Stanford, who also set the single season scoring record at IU last year with 57 goals, could also be on the verge of breaking her own mark before the season's end. She currently has 45 goals this year, and 152 in her career.
The GOLDen Goalkeeper
Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Goldner, has seen quite the action this year splitting time with senior goalie Kristen Mayberry. The Los Altos Hills, California native has recorded 110 saves on 260 shots (.423) and has only allowed 73 goals on the season.
Do You Like Green Eggs & Ham?
That was a question that a select group of IU water polo players was asking the Bloomington youth at the beginning of March. Seniors Molly Fonner and Kate McCollum, junior Kristin Stanford and sophomore Kristy Streefkerk step out of the pool and into the classroom on March 1, to participate with other Indiana University student-athletes in the Read Across America program. The four read a choice of books to youngsters at Templeton Elementary school.
Stanford Honored
Junior Kristin Stanford was honored March 2 as the water polo recipient of the Indiana University Scholastic Achievement Award.
The award was established in 1979 by the IU Varsity Club, to honor and acknowledge the academic excellence of one athlete every year in each varsity sport.
The Varsity Club is the fundraising organization for men's and women's athletic scholarships at Indiana University. We are committed to maintaining Indiana's excellence in academics and athletics, and it is our privilege to acknowledge the accomplishments of these fine student-athletes.
Stanford, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, will have her name permanently displayed on a plaque in the north lobby of Assembly Hall.
She's Stealing Everyone's Heart
Over Spring Break, Indiana senior Molly Fonner moved into second place all-time on the Hoosier career steal list with 204.
The Beaverton, Oregon native moved past Sheri Fagley's 203 steals on the career list during the Cal-State Bakersfield game. Fonner recorded five steals in the Hoosiers' 9-2 win over the Roadrunners.
Fonner currently has 225 steals for her career and 50 on the season. Former Hoosier Deb Simone ranks first on the list with 326 career steals.
Sharna...Australian for Goals
In the beginning of the Hoosiers' season at the Michigan Invitational, freshman Sharna Nelson proved that she doesn't want to waste anytime becoming accustomed to America. The Grafton, Australia native, who had never played in an American water polo match before the Invite, came out firing in her first game against No. 7 Hawaii, scoring five goals on nine shots.
"I was pleased with Sharna and how she got in the mix right away," said Hoosier head coach Barry King. "She exploded against Hawaii, and I think her outside shooting is a welcomed addition."
Nelson went on to tally six goals on 17 shots (.353), two assists and five steals at the Michigan Invitational. Not bad for the first time in America. Currently, Nelson is second on the team in scoring with 41 goals on 114 shots.
Oh Canada!!!
After sophomore Kristy Streefkerk recorded her scoring career high of four goals at the Michigan Invitational in January, she decided to better that performance at the UCSD Invitational.
The Surrey, British Columbia, Canada native scored five goals on 11 shots. Streefkerk currently has 22 goals on 43 shots this season.
"Streef had her best performance of her Indiana career in San Diego," Coach King said. "She was physical on both ends and was excellent in two-meters."
Molly, It's Okay to Steal
Senior Molly Fonner has been quite the active one in the pool as of late. The Beaverton, Oregon native tallied six steals against UC-Irvine in the UCSD Invitational and also recorded four goals. Her six steal total against the Anteaters was just two shy of her career high eight, that she recorded against Illinois on April 10, 2000. For her efforts, Fonner was honored as the CWPA Player of the Week for the week of February 6-13.
At The Helm...Head Coach Barry King
Indiana water polo now in its fifth varsity season under Head Coach Barry King (100-62-2), has developed into a team that competes on the national level. In its first three seasons, IU water polo advanced to three consecutive National Championships.
King has been credited with coaching 13 All-Big Ten Conference selections, an honorable mention All-American, 11 All-Midwest Regional selections and 26 Academic All-Big Ten athletes.
King has been very successful with not only his athletes winning in the Big Ten but his teams too. Indiana won the Big Ten Championship in 2000 and placed second in 1998 and 1999.
Last season King guided the Hoosiers into a new conference, the Collegiate Water Polo Association, and had the same success as in his first three years. He coached the squad to an 18-12-1 record and a 6-2 record in the CWPA. He led IU to a third-place finish at the CWPA Southern Division Championship and a sixth-place finish at the Eastern Championship.
The Madera, California native earned his bachelor of arts in athletic counseling (1988) and master of arts in exercise physiology (1993) from Fresno State. He also rowed two years for the University of California crew team before transferring to Fresno State.
Before coming to Indiana to work on a doctorate in exercise physiology, King coached men's and women's water polo at Madera High School (1987-88), freshman boy's basketball at Clovis High School (1986-88) and varsity swimming at San Joaquin Memorial High School.
He also coached Indiana's club water polo team for three years before it earned varsity status.

Aloha Means STAN-d Back
In Indiana's 8-3 loss to Hawaii at the UCSD Invite, junior Kristin Stanford earned four kickouts, and tallied two steals and one assist. After the game, she was taken to the UCSD Medical Center for X-rays on her left wrist. Although, her wrist was just bruised and sprained, this was not the first time the Cincinnati, Ohio native has been hurt while playing the Rainbows.
During the Hoosiers' 11-8 loss to Hawaii, its first game of
the season, Stanford carded two goals on five shots before leaving with a bruised left eye late in the match.
California Love...
On Indiana's 2002 roster, five of the 16 girls hail from California, the state represented by the most girls on the team. Indiana's very own Cali girls are seniors Kirsten Mayberry (Irvine/Irvine H.S.) and Kate McCollum (Rocklin/Sierra Junior College); juniors Ginger Wang (Rowland Heights/Rowland H.S.) and Kim Steele (Yorba Linda/Esperanza/Golden West); and freshman Jessica Goldner (Los Altos Hills/Henry M. Gunn H.S.).
Beaverton Buddies
This season, senior Molly Fonner will have a lot to share with fellow teammate freshman Krista Peterson. Not only are the two girls both 5-11 utility starters, but they are both from Beaverton, Oregon. Fonner graduated from Westview H.S lettering two years in water polo, while Peterson earned four varsity letters in both water polo and swimming at Sunset High School.
"Barry King.....C'mon Down!!!"
What started as a water polo trip to the California coast for the Hoosiers in April of 1997, turned into a very memorable experience for Indiana head coach Barry King.
After an exhausting tournament, King convinced his Hoosiers to stand in line at 5:00 a.m. and try to get tickets for the "Price is Right" television show.
To everyone's surprise, King was called as one of the first four contestants at the start of the show. Bidding on the first prize, a set of rollerblades and snowboards, King placed a prefect bid of $1,250, which not only got him on the stage but also a $100 bonus for guessing the exact dollar amount.
Dressed in his Indiana sweatshirt, King played the game Easy As 1-2-3, a game where he had to place a dish set, a chair and a refrigerator in order from least expensive to the most.
King lost the game, having priced the dish set more expensive than the chair. Host Bob Barker then turned to King and replied "We should've done this game under water."
In the popular Showcase Showdown, King spun the big wheel first and stayed on his first spin of $0.70. King found unfortunate luck once again when the second contestant got a two-spin total of $0.85.
"It was a really fun experience," said King. "I would have won big if they put me on the golf game or Plinko. Instead, they've got me pricing dishes and chairs."
