Hoosiers Sign Four Recruits

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana women's water polo team recently signed four recruits including three from California and one from the state of Oregon. The new recruits will add to a solid nucleus returning from this season's third-place squad at the CWPA Eastern Championships.
"The impressive thing about this class of student-athletes is all the players come from some of the best California and Oregon programs during the high school and summer season," Indiana Head Coach Barry King said. "They have received some of the best high school coaching available and competed against the best opponents possible. In the classroom they have excelled and will be able to meet the academic challenges that Indiana will provide them."
The Hoosiers add another Beaverton, Ore. product to their roster. Emily Schmitt played at Westview High School, and joins sophomore-to-be Krista Peterson, who also hails from Beaverton. Schmitt played on two consecutive state championship teams in 2000 and 2001, and her team also finished as the state runner-up in 1999. During both her junior and senior seasons, she was selected to the first team All-State and first team All-State Tournament teams in Oregon, along with being distinguished as the Metro League Conference Most Valuable Player both years. During her final campaign, Schmitt was named the Most Valuable Player in the state of Oregon.
Along with Schmitt, the Hoosiers add three players from the state of California in the form of Clare Meadows, Bridget McKeon and Courtney Thom.
Meadows is a Mission Viejo, Calif. native, who attended Capistrano Valley High School. She was a three-year varsity starter, and was selected first team All-League and third team All-CIF as a senior.
McKeon hails from Coronnado High School in Coronado, Calif. During her career, McKeon's teams won the 1998 and 1999 CIF San Diego Championship. In her senior campaign, McKeon was selected first team at the Lady Islander Invitational, third team All-CIF and second team All-League. McKeon is also an honor roll student outside of the pool.
Thom was the captain of her San Clemente High School team her senior season as well as first team All-League and second team All-CIF. Out of the pool, Thom was the Student Body Vice President her senior year and Class President her junior term. Along with leadership credentials, Thom is also a honor roll student.
"This group will be the foundation of Indiana water polo for the next four years," King said. "We (coaches and players) are extremely excited and fortunate to have them as Hoosiers. They will help raise us to the next level in terms of competitiveness. The group is very well rounded in terms of playing different positions, and providing a nice balance in the water. These girls should have a very productive and fun four years here at IU."
