BOCA RATON, Fla. - Indiana University sophomore Krista Peterson netted a game high two goals Monday to lead the U.S. women's team past Canada 8-2, in the Junior Pan American Water Polo Championships.
Peterson, a native of Beaverton, Ore., shared scoring honors with Alison Gregorka in the win, pleasing the U.S. and University of Michigan head coach, Amber Drury-Pinto.
"This was a great way to start the tournament," she said. "We always expect to win and hope the momentum keeps building throughout the final matches."
Last year, Peterson played in 35 of the 37 Hoosier matches, scoring 50 goals, which was third overall on the team and ninth best in school history. She also recorded 30 assists and 39 steals in her first collegiate season. Peterson's assists total was the sixth highest output in school history.
The Junior Pan Am games are being held on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, which will play its first Division I varsity women's water polo season in the spring of 2004.
The games, which last through Sunday, serve as a qualifier for next year's Junior World Championships.
