Bloomington, Ind. -- Twenty-one returners and 11 newcomers, including nine true freshmen, will kick off preseason training for the 2002 Indiana soccer season on Aug. 14. The Hoosiers return 17 letterwinners and six starters from a team that compiled an 18-4-1 record a season ago. Indiana will be looking for its sixth straight trip to the College Cup in 2002.
With the dawn of the new season, the leadership of seven seniors (Pat Noonan, Ryan Mack, Michael Bock, Marcus Chorvat, Matt Reiswerg, Phil Presser and John Swann) will no doubt guide the Indiana soccer program. This contingent has experienced its share of success over the past three seasons, posting a 55-14-1 record and making three straight appearances in the College Cup, including winning a national title in 1999.
This season's roster also features three juniors (Vijay Dias, David Prall and Drew Shinabarger) and nine sophomores (Jay Nolly, Josh Reiher, Danny O'Rourke, Ned Grabavoy, Trey Meek, Mike Ambersley, Greg Badger, Michael Bowditch and Eric Goldstein).
Four redshirt freshmen are prepared for the first IU action of their careers (Pat Yates, Heath Creager, Noah Gold and Chris Pomeroy). The Hoosiers' incoming freshman class was recently ranked as the nation's fourth best by College Soccer News. Matt Schlake, Brian Plotkin, Nick Kuklenski, Jordan Chirico, John Michael Hayden, Nathan Scherpenisse, Josh Tudela, Andy Bathrick and Andy Boesch will don the Cream and Crimson for the first time in 2002.
