Peterson Scores in Team USA Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. - As was the case Monday, Indiana University sophomore Krista Peterson found the back of the net at the Junior Pan American Games, helping Team USA to a 19-2 victory over Puerto Rico.
The Beaverton, Ore., native was one of 10 players to score for Team USA. Erika Figge's five goals highlighted the victory for the U.S. in a game that saw six players score two or more goals. The U.S. led 8-1 at halftime and 14-1 after three quarters in the victory.
After the game, U.S. player Scotti Schafer gave the Puerto Rican squad more credit than the scoreboard might merit.
"They are a very talented team with lots of potential," she said. "But our team is also a really talented, really close group of girls where everyone is a contributor."
Peterson scored two goals Monday in an 8-2 win over Canada to share scoring honors with U.S. teammate Alison Gregorka.
Last year, Peterson played in 35 of the 37 Hoosier matches, scoring 50 goals, which was third overall on the team and ninth best in school history. She also recorded 30 assists and 39 steals in her first collegiate season. Peterson's assists total was the sixth highest output in school history.
The Junior Pan Am games are being held on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, which will play its first Division I varsity women's water polo season in the spring of 2004.
The games, which last through Sunday, serve as a qualifier for next year's Junior World Championships.
Peterson and the U.S. women's team return to the pool Wednesday at 1:20 p.m. EST to battle Mexico.
