Field Hockey Begins Practice (8-16-02)

Bloomington, Ind. - Yesterday the Indiana field hockey team launched its 2002 campaign with fitness testing. Shortly following they set up into stations to begin work on the fundamentals, which will be a primary focus for the beginning of preseason.
"We are starting new, we have a whole new team, so we are not going to assume that everyone knows everything there is. We will start with the fundamentals," said coach Robertson. "This will be a huge focus for us."
With the team having more experience than in its first two years of the program, coach Robertson plans to focus on more than just the fundamentals and how to play the game.
"The other focus will be instituting game play, smaller game situations, so the team knows how to use the fundamentals in specific situations," coach Robertson said. "Right from the start we want to get the players thinking about the system we are going to play this year. We want them to understand how we are going to defend as a team and how we are going to attack as a team. Overall, more generally our focus is going to be more on teaching them how to win games and how to be very competitive. In the past our focus has mostly been on how to play the game."
Overall the first practice was what the players expected, however, freshman Morgan Albini is anticipating the intensity of future session.
"We were really intense today," Morgan Albini said. "The team is really looking forward to a great year. It was pretty much what I expected it to be for a first practice. Everyone was really just getting their touch back on the ball, but it will definitely be stepped up the next practice, I am sure."
Albini is right. Although the intensity and focus was great, coach Robertson has high expectations and is ready to push the team to its max.
"We have mixed feelings about the first day," said coach Robertson. "We have set a much higher standard than in the past but it is a standard that we must reach as a team in order to be effective and successful in 2002. As far as the practices were concerned the intensity and focus is great. The players are taking ownership of their fundamentals and their effort is outstanding. We are on the right track and we will continue to push forward as hard as we can."
