Team USA Defeats Brazil 9-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Indiana University sophomore Krista Peterson was held scoreless Thursday, but managed to help the U.S. to a 9-2 win over Brazil to improve Team USA's record to 4-0 in the 2002 Junior Pan American Games.
Lauren Heineck broke loose for three goals in the win for the U.S., while teammate Kelly Rulon scored two. Team USA struggled a bit on the player-advantage, shooting 1 for 5 on the afternoon.
Peterson, a native of Beaverton, Ore., has scored six goals in four Junior Pan Am games. Thursday marked the first game she was held scoreless. She led Team USA Monday with two goals in an 8-2 victory over Canada and netted a goal against Puerto Rico in a 19-2 win on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Peterson was one of 11 different U.S. players to score for Team USA, finding the back of the net twice for her fifth and sixth goals of the tournament.
Last year, Peterson played in 35 of the 37 Hoosier matches, scoring 50 goals, which was third overall on the team and ninth best in school history. She also recorded 30 assists and 39 steals in her first collegiate season. Peterson's assists total was the sixth highest output in school history.
The Junior Pan Am games are being held on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, which will play its first Division I varsity women's water polo season in the spring of 2004.
The games, which last through Sunday, serve as a qualifier for next year's Junior World Championships.
The women's team will have the day off Friday in preparation for the playoffs, which begin on Saturday (August 17). The U.S. is currently first in the women's bracket at 4-0, and is slated to play the fourth place team in the first round. Brazil and Puerto Rico are currently tied for third in the win-loss column at 1-2, and will play each other Friday to settle the difference. Mexico remains winless at 0-3.
