Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana University men's soccer team is ranked No. 1 in the preseason adidas/NSCAA national poll released Thursday by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America. The top-ranking marks the Hoosiers' second in preseason polls as IU also received the nod in the College Soccer News top 30 poll released earlier this month.
Stanford, St. John's and North Carolina, the three teams in addition to Indiana that reached College Cup in 2001, and Virginia round out the top five in the poll.
The Hoosiers will battle No. 20 Kentucky to open their exhibition season on Friday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. before facing Virginia on Sunday, Aug. 25, at Noon. Both games are a part of the IPFW Soccer Showcase and will be played at the Hefner Soccer Fields in Ft. Wayne, Ind.
As always, Indiana will face a tough schedule in 2002 and it will waste no time getting started. The Hoosiers will open the regular season at home in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Bill Armstrong Stadium against No. 7 Rutgers on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 30, IU will battle ninth-ranked Clemson at 8 p.m.
