Bloomington, Ind. -Indiana opens the 2002 season at the EA Sports Maui Invitational, where the Hoosiers will face Massachusetts in the first round on Nov. 25 at 5:00 p.m. EDT at Lahaina Civic Center. IU will meet either Utah or Gonzaga in the second round Nov. 26 at 9:30 p.m. EDT. The championship game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. EDT on Nov. 27. ESPN will televise the tournament, and the television schedule will be announced in the near future.
"The Maui Invitational is a great way to start out our season," IU coach Mike Davis said. "The tournament field is very balanced. We'll have our work cut out for us with UMass in the first round, and then it doesn't get any easier - Utah, Gonzaga, Arizona State, Virginia, Kentucky."
This marks the fourth time that Indiana will compete in the Maui Invitational. Overall, IU has posted a 5-4 record in Maui. The Hoosiers advanced to the championship game of the 1998 tournament, where they lost to Syracuse, 76-63.
In other schedule news, the Dec. 28 game at Temple will tip off at 4 p.m. EDT and will be televised by ESPN. Indiana has 12 national television appearances this season and could have as many as 16 when you include the Maui Invitational games and the season finale at Penn State, which will be shown either regionally or nationally.
