Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana University head volleyball coach Katie Weismiller today announced that Ryan Theis has been added to her staff as an assistant coach. He joins former IU standout assistant Cydryce Carter, who was named to Weismiller's staff this past April.
In addition to his on-court duties, Theis will be responsible for a number of administrative functions, including team travel, equipment, and recruiting.
"We are very pleased to add Ryan to our staff," said Weismiller. "He has experience coaching at the Division One level and is an accomplished recruiter. He'll also bring great energy to our staff."
Most recently, Theis spent the past two seasons as the top assistant and head recruiter for the women's volleyball program at Eastern Illinois University. In 2001, he helped lead the Panthers to a 21-9 overall mark, including a 12-4 record in the Ohio Valley Conference. Eastern Illinois capped its 2001 season by winning the Ohio Valley Conference tournament and earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
Prior to joining Brenda Winkeler's staff at Eastern Illinois, Theis was the head coach of the men's volleyball club at Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1997-00. A 2000 graduate of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Theis also served as a student assistant coach for the women's team (1999-00) and was director of competition for the club-level Midwest 10 Volleyball Conference from 1999-01.
As a player, Theis was a setter at Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1996. Following the elimination of the men's volleyball program, he competed at the club level from 1997-00 and was a two-time All-Midwest 10 selection as a setter and three-time team captain. From 1998-99, Theis coached the Waukesha (WI) Volleyball Club.
A native of Madison, Wis., Theis received his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2000 and earned a master's degree in Athletic Administration/Sport Management from Eastern Illinois in 2002. He presently sits on the Assistant Coaches Committee of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
