Hoosiers Receive 2001-02 AVCA/Molten Team Academic Award

Bloomington, Ind. -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association and Molten U.S.A., Inc. have recognized Indiana University's volleyball program, along with 46 other Division I schools, as a recipient of the 2001-02 AVCA/Molten Team Academic Award. The award honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the 2001-02 school year. Teams must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale to be recognized.
"Our volleyball teams at Indiana have always featured excellent students, but this is as good a group as we've had across the board," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "This award is a reflection of the importance that this university, its athletic department, and our volleyball program places on academics. With that said, academic success does not replace on-court performance. We must be successful both in the arena and in the classroom."
Among the 47 Division I schools that received the award, Indiana's 3.42 cumulative grade point average tied for 19th, and ranked first among Big Ten Conference schools. Michigan State was the only other Big Ten program to receive such recognition.
