Bloomington, Ind. -- Although the team spent most of its summer training together in Bloomington, the Indiana University volleyball squad officially reported to campus on Wednesday to begin preparations for the 2002 campaign. This year's roster features 11 players, including incoming freshmen Mandy Eberle (Sussex, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Ashley White (St. Charles, Ill./East). In addition, head coach Katie Weismiller's staff features two new assistant coaches -- former Hoosier standout Cydryce Carter and Ryan Theis.
Said Weismiller of the 2002 Hoosiers, "Indiana's going to line up, and we're bigger physically than we've ever been. We're more talented offensively. Also, our defense has really picked up, and we are blocking more balls. I think you're going to see that Indiana is going to creep up in the Big Ten, and we might be a surprise early, but hopefully our opponents understand that our kids are maturing."
On Thursday, Weismiller's charges underwent physicals, which were followed by an NCAA rules compliance meeting at 4:00 p.m. at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers opened practice at 8:30 a.m. on Friday at the University School and will participate in two sessions each on Saturday and Sunday.
Indiana will begin its 2002 campaign vs. Drake at the Northern Illinois Invitational in DeKalb, Ill., on Friday, August 30. The first serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
