A Summer of Hard Work Shows Improvement
Bloomington, Ind. - It was 12:01 a.m. on Saturday when fall camp officially kicked off with the much anticipated shuttle run and it was clear that the veterans on the squad spent their summer working hard on their conditioning. In January a total of eight players passed the conditioning test. This time 53 of the 65 upperclassman passed and every one of the seniors will be heading to camp and suiting up for practice later today as all of them passed the test.The conditioning test consists of a 300-yard shuttle run which is completed twice by each player with a 5:00 break between runs. It is the players average time that determines if he passes. Each position has a specific time that must be met to pass. If an underclassmen does not pass they take part in "penalty" workouts at 6 a.m. each morning. If a senior does not pass they are no longer a part of the team.
Not only were the Hoosiers passing the test, but some were setting new records. Head Coach Gerry DiNardo has done this test for nine years and has maintained a record book by position and this morning a few of those records fell. Senior offensive lineman Enoch DeMar ran a 59.57 which beat the old mark of 60.24 which had stood over nearly a decade. Senior defensive back Antonio Watson set a new mark of his own with a time of 53.31 which included an amazing 49.0 on his first run. The old mark was 53.66. Senior linebacker Ron Bethel posted a new record for his position with a time of 55.39. The old mark was 56.08, a mark sophomore Herana-Daze Jones himself eclipsed with a time of 55.50.
The biggest improvement was by senior offensive lineman A.C. Myler. Needing a time of 64.0 to stay in camp, Myler posted a 63.5 with the entire team and coaching staff cheering him on. Over 100 people lined both sides of the shuttle course and followed Myler up and back right up until he crossed the finish line. Myler had posted a 79.06 and 74.99 in his previous other two shuttle runs earlier in the year.
"The players deserve a lot of credit for their hard work over the summer," DiNardo said. "They should be proud of themselves but also realize that they still have a lot of work to do. Later today we start playing the game."
The atmosphere at the Mellencamp Pavilion was electric right up until the shuttle concluded at 1:30 a.m. The same atmosphere will make its way to the practice field at 2:30 p.m. later today.
