Hoosiers Shut Out Louisville (09-10-02)

Bloomington, Ind. -- The ninth-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team returned home to Bill Armstrong Stadium to post a 2-0 victory over Louisville on Tuesday night. The Hoosiers improved to 2-1-2, while the Cardinals dropped to 2-3. This marks IU's 10th straight victory over Louisville in the all-time series.
Indiana scored in the 15th minute on a Louisville corner kick. Senior Ryan Mack served the ball into the box and senior John Swann notched his first goal of the season on a header. The assist marked Mack's second of the season to bring his point total to four.
The Hoosiers tallied a second goal at the 75:05 mark as freshman Brian Plotkin played the ball to senior Pat Noonan. Noonan headed it far post from eight yards out to make it 2-0, Indiana.
The insurance goal was a milestone score for both Noonan and Plotkin. Noonan's 36th career goal moved him past Lazo Alavanja and into 13th place on the Hoosiers' career scoring list. The assist marked Plotkin's first career points.
Goalkeeper Jay Nolly recorded the second shutout of the season and of his career. Indiana held the Cardinals to a Hoosier season-best four shots on goal.
"Our play was the finest we've seen in awhile and they were chasing us, especially in the first half," Hoosier head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "It was good to have Mike Ambersley back (from injury) and that's a reason why we were moving the ball so nicely. Our play in the final third (of the field) was better. We were putting our bodies on the line. It still seems to be a tick off and that's what we need to work on."
Ambersley returned to the starting lineup after missing the last three games due to a back injury.
Louisville coach Tony Colavecchia felt that his team's slow start made the difference.
"In the first half, Indiana had their way with us and had us back on our feet," he said. "In the second half, we were a different team. This (Bill Armstrong Stadium) is an intimidating place to play. Give Noonan credit. He worked for his goal, but that's why he's an All-American."
Indiana out-shot Louisville eight to one in the first half and 13 to four for the game.
The Hoosiers are in action this weekend at the Butler Classic in Indianapolis. IU takes on Air Force on Friday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. and then will play Hartwick on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Noon.
