Indiana Downs Villanova, 3-1 (9-15-02)

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Hoosiers beat the Wildcats of Villanova, 3-1 in this mornings contest. IU captured its second win of the season, extending its record to, 2-4. The Wildcats drop to, 3-3.
The Indiana field hockey team proved today that it does not matter how many shots you take, but how many you make. IU only took four shots to Villanova's 20.
The Villanova Wildcats dominated the first half, out shooting the Hoosiers nine to two, and 5-0 on penalty corners. However, the Hoosiers were able to convert on one of their two shots of the half, as Kimberly Nash recorded her second goal of the season.
The goal by Nash sparked the Hoosiers as their intensity level rose and they began to dominate on the attacking end. With only :24 remaining in the half co-captain Erica Nilsson dribbled the ball 30 yards and took a hard drive from the top of the circle. Her shot just missed, going wide on the right side of the cage. The Hoosiers went into intermission with the lead, 1-0.
The Wildcats came into the second half fired up as they continued to dominate on offense. Junior Christina Lugones tied the game at one a piece off of a drive from the top of the circle.
The Hoosiers continued to fight, and on their first penalty corner of the game, Kayla Bashore broke the tie, 2-1. Nilsson sent the ball to the top of the circle to Ryan Woolsey who made the stick stop for Bashore. Bashore wound up and sent one by goalkeeper Meghan Helwig. This proved to be the game winner, the second for Bashore this year.
With 3:34 remaining in the contest, freshman Nikki Orciuch capped the victory for IU. With a scramble in front of the cage, a poised Orciuch pushed the ball into the right corner, making the final score 3-1.
This is the second win for Indiana and the second time that sophomore Kayla Bashore had the winning shot. A modest Bashore does not feel that this was her best performance, but feels that the team played with confidence.
"Before the game the team decided that we have to stop talking about what we want to do on the field, and just do it," Bashore said. "We finally did that today."
The coaching staff is proud and excited to get their second win of the season. Indiana field hockey has come a long way in only three years.
"We got the job done today," assistant coach Gina Lucido said. "The coaching staff is proud of the team effort, especially on offense. Villanova is a great team. I feel that once we went up 2-1 our momentum also went up, and we were able to take them (Villanova) out of their game. We need to continue playing the way we did today. We don't necessarily care about our record, as long as we continue to fight."
The Hoosiers are back on the road Saturday, September 21, as they face inter-state rival Ball State University.
