Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana men's soccer player John Swann has been selected the Big Ten Conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. Swann, a senior captain, anchored a Hoosier defense that gave up only one goal to two top 10 over the weekend in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
Swann, who is Indiana's lone returning starter on defense, played all 220 minutes in a pair of double overtime games against No. 7 Rutgers and No. 9 Clemson. Indiana held Rutgers scoreless and finished in a 0-0 tie in opening round action. IU allowed just one goal in the second match against Clemson and again finished in a draw, 1-1. For his efforts, he was named the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic Defensive MVP.
Wisconsin goalkeeper Eric Hanson shared the Defensive Player of the Week award with Swann, while Ohio State's Andy Rosenband earned Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors.
Indiana will return to the field this weekend in the St. John's Classic in Jamaica, N.Y. The Hoosiers will open the Classic against William and Mary on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. and then take on third-ranked St. John's on Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. Both games will be played at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
