Muncie, IN - The Cardinals of Ball State University defeated the Hoosiers this afternoon, 1-0. Indiana falls to 2-5 overall as Ball State extends its record to 3-1.
Ball State dominated on attack, out shooting Indiana 27-3, and capitalizing on penalty corners, 19-4. Leading BSU in shots was Allison Haynes with nine, and Jenn Budney followed with six.
Allison Haynes scored the only goal of the game on a sweep, only 3:58 into the contest. This is the second time this season that BSU has been victorious over the Hoosiers.
Indiana goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek kept the Hoosiers in the game by having yet another great performance, stopping 17 of Ball State's attempts.
"Molly kept her composure in the cage and stayed calm," head coach Amy Robertson said.
Both coach Robertson and Ball State head coach Jen Halliday was overall disappointed in the game.
"To be honest, I was really disappointed in our play today," BSU Halliday said. "To outshoot a team by the margin that we did plus have 19 corners with only one goal shows that we were not executing. I thought Indiana did a really nice job of packing it in on us defensively and we were lucky to get out of here with a win."
"Both team came out flat," Robertson said. "We were trying to do the right things, but the team lacked confidence and would question whether they were making the right decisions."
Despite the loss, coach Robertson felt that the team could learn from this game, and that many players came off of the bench and contributed good minutes.
"There were some nice combinations today, however they were in pieces though," said Robertson. "We used the width of the field and made nice passes, but what plagued us the most was when we lost the ball on defense we weren't trying hard enough to get it back."
"We did good things, but we need to trust out abilities and play our game, Robertson continued. "The subs coming off the bench played really well. Brooke Evans and Amelia Quane put in good minutes today."
Indiana heads back on the road, September 28, to face Georgetown University at 1:00 p.m., then turns around on Sunday, September 29, to open up against Big Ten opponent Penn State.
