Hoosier Roll In Big Ten Opener (09-22-02)

East Lansing, Mich. - The No. 9 Indiana men's soccer team opened its Big Ten Conference season with a 6-1 victory over No. 22 Michigan State Sunday at Old College Field in East Lansing. Indiana (5-1-2) moved its all-time record against the Spartans (5-2-0) to 30-0 with the victory.
"This was a big boost for our team," IU head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "We had been struggling offensively. We worked hard to make sure we were mentally ready coming in. There was some beautiful offense today. With the chances we had been creating, I knew the floodgates were going to open."
Indiana wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with 46 seconds run off the clock. Sophomore Ned Grabavoy got the action started he took a cross from fellow sophomore Mike Ambersley and hit the crossbar. Senior Pat Noonan collected the rebound and dished it to junior Vijay Dias, who scored his first goal of the season, as it he booted the ball from the left to the right top corner. Dias' goal was the first that Michigan State goalkeeper Tyler Robinson had given up to an opposing team this season.
The Hoosiers added a second goal in the 25th minute, on a Noonan to senior Ryan Mack connection. Noonan provided the assist again and with the point and became the 14th player in IU history to score 100 points in his career.
At the 43:19 mark, Indiana tallied its third goal. This time it was Noonan who got the score on assists from Grabavoy and Mack.
Four minutes into the second half, Noonan tallied his second goal, once again on assist from Grabavoy. The Ballwin, Mo., product took the pass from Grabavoy on the right side from 15 yards out and buried it in the top left corner, giving Indiana a 4-0 lead.
Goal number five came on a corner kick courtesy of sophomore Michel Bowditch. Grabavoy took the corner, senior Michael Bock got his head on it before Bowdtich put it away for the first goal of his IU career.
Michigan State scored its lone goal at the 69:46 mark. Thomas Trivelloni scored on an assist from Steve Doster.
Mack capped the scoring with his second goal at 85:44. Mack rebounded his own shot off the right post and put it in the back of the net to make it 6-1.
Several Hoosiers had career games today. Noonan, in addition to hitting the 100-point career mark, logged a career-best with six points. Grabavoy's three assists were also a career high. Mack's five points also marked a career high.
Indiana will play its fourth-straight game on the road on Friday, Sept. 27, at Penn State. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. (CST)
