Archibald Named Big Ten POW

Bloomington, Ind. -- For the first time since Amanda Welter earned similar honors on October 16, 2000, sophomore outside hitter Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) was recognized by the Big Ten Conference earlier today as its player-of-the-week in the sport of volleyball. Archibald becomes only the 11th Indiana volleyball player (on 15 previous occasions) to earn the honor. She has helped lead the Hoosiers, whose starting lineup includes only one senior, to a 10-2 record, which equals the second-best start in school history.This past weekend, the 6-foot-2 Archibald was named Most Valuable Player of the IU Credit Union Classic after leading the Hoosiers to a perfect 3-0 record, including a 3-1 victory over then 30th-ranked Louisville and wins over Butler and Central Michigan. In three games last week, she averaged 5.8 kills and 2.9 digs per game while hitting at a .331 clip, this despite the fact that she spent the greater portion of the week fighting flu-like symptoms.
Already this season, Archibald has been named to all-tournament teams at the Northern Illinois Invitational, the Indiana TIS/Taylor Imprinted Sportswear Classic, the Terrapin Invitational and the IU Credit Union Classic (MVP). In addition, junior Academic All-America candidate Melissa Brewer (NIU Invitational [MVP], IU Credit Union Classic), junior Nikki Hill (IU Credit Union Classic) sophomore captain Katie Pollom (NIU Invitational), and senior libero Hillary Toivonen (Terrapin Invitational) have earned all-tournament honors. This past weekend, Toivonen recorded her 1,000th career dig, which moved her into fourth place on Indiana's all-time dig list.
Against a Louisville squad that was leading Conference-USA and has already this season defeated national powers Arizona and Colorado State, Archibald recorded 26 kills (6.5 per game) while hitting .360 for the match. She also added nine digs and five blocks. Earlier in the weekend, she recorded a double-double in the victory over the Bulldogs, racking up 24 kills and 18 digs while adding an ace and a pair of blocks.
"Christina (Archibald) had a tremendous weekend," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "The way that we played against Louisville is the way that I expect this team to play."
In 46 games played in 2002, Archibald is averaging a team-best 4.67 kills per game, a .270 hitting percentage, and an average of 2.63 digs per contest. Also one of the finest high jumpers in the Big Ten Conference, Archibald recorded a fourth-place finish in that event at the 2002 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Indiana returns to action on Wednesday for its Big Ten opener vs. 11th-ranked Ohio State (6-3). The match vs. the Buckeyes will be played at the University Gymnasium at 10th and the Bypass. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Hoosiers are also in action on Friday when they play at No. 9 Penn State.
