We sat down with sophomore Ryan Recht to discuss everything from restaurants to Anna Kournikova.
Athlete Spotlight: Who were your idol(s) growing up?
Ryan Recht: My dad and I would probably have to say Pete Sampras.
AS: Why did you decide to come to Indiana University?
RR: The campus is beautiful, great tennis team, it is close to home, and I wanted to play for a good college team in the Big Ten.
AS: What has been your greatest accomplishment in tennis?
RR: I would have to say either my city tennis tournament because I was the youngest player to do so, or possibly winning the sportsmanship award at the Ball State national tournament because I think that kind of complimented my personality.
AS: What are your pre-match rituals?
RR: Not really, I just try to get warmed up, get a nice sweat going, and get stretched out. Right before, I like to go off by myself and think about my match. If I know who I am playing, think about what I need to do against them.
AS: If you could pick any three people in the world to play doubles with, who would you pick?
RR: (Anna) Kournikova, Pete Sampras because he is one of the best players in the world. And third would be John McEnroe. I would want Kournikova on my team because she is pretty hot.
AS: What do you like to do outside of tennis?
Coach Ken Hydinger intervenes: Study and go to church.
RR: (laughs) I like to go out with my friends, kind of relax, and just go with the flow.
AS: What is your favorite restaurant in Bloomington?
RR: I think it is called Yonko's. (Asks teammate Michael Kandinov) Hey Mike what is that steak place called? Like Yonko's or what?
Micheal Kandinov: Janko's, yeah that is it Janko's.
AS: What do you want to do after college?
RR: Possibly see how my tennis career would be, and if that doesn’t work out, maybe go back home and work for my dad’s business.
