Hoosiers Drop First Big Ten Battle
University Park, Penn. - The battle began in a steady downpour at No. 13 Penn State's Jeffrey Field. The Cream and Crimson entered the game with a four-game unbeaten streak and did not have intentions of letting it go. However, the Nittany Lions had an unbeaten streak of their own going and extended it to six games without a loss with their 3-0 win over Indiana. "Overall I would give our team a 'C' grade tonight," said Hoosier head coach Mick Lyon. "We succumbed to the pressure of playing a team like Penn State. We are in the process of developing the ability to play under pressure. Tonight, we didn't respond well to the pressure."
After out-shooting, out-fouling and out-cornering Big Ten rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota the Hoosiers had their hands full with the Nittany Lions and did not better them in any category except for saves as the Hoosiers had three to the Lions' two.
"The team didn't play with the same enthusiasm as they did last weekend (against Wisconsin and Minnesota)," said Lyon. "We just didn't play with game-intelligence tonight."
Through the first half of the game, the Hoosiers were held out of their offensive rhythm and were unable to take a shot on goal. To the credit of the IU defense, Penn State managed just three shots on goal in the first half. Indiana headed to the locker room down 2-0, but everyone knew there was still 45 minutes where anything could happen.
The second half the teams were more evenly matched and Indiana was finally able to get a few scoring opportunities, netting just two shots, both of them on goal.
The Hoosiers' record drops to 4-3-1 with a 1-1-1 Big Ten mark with the 3-0 loss to the Nittany Lions. Indiana travels to Columbus, Ohio for a Sunday game with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
