Results from Saturday's competition at the Lady Northern
IOWA CITY, Iowa- Two weeks ago the Indiana women's golf team swept the individual and team championships at the Wolverine Invitational. The Hoosiers took a step toward accomplishing the feat once again at the Lady Northern in Iowa City, Iowa on Saturday.
The No. 8 Indiana women's golf team shot a 5-over-par, 589 (295-294) to lead the Lady Northern after 36-holes. The 589 is the second best 36-hole score in school history. The Hoosiers 587 at the 1998 NCAA Championships is the Hoosiers' top two-round score. Indiana's Karen Dennison picked up where she left off at the Wolverine Invitational as she leads the individual standings after shooting a school record six-under par, 140 (72-68) Saturday.
"The girls played really good today," head coach Sam Carmichael said. "We have a seven shot lead over Kent State and I was really pleased with the way they played. Those two scores (295 and 294) are two excellent totals. Everyone is playing pretty well right now."
The Hoosiers were tied with Penn State after 18 holes at 295, but IU blitzed the par 73, 6,000-yard course for a 294 on its second 18 of the day. The 294 was the best round of the day by any team and the Hoosiers own a seven shot advantage over Kent State (596) and an 11-shot lead on Penn State (600).
Dennison, ranked the nation's top golfer by Golfweek/Sagarin, fired a 1-under-par 72 in her opening 18 and followed it up with a 5-under-par 68 in the final 18 of the day. The 68 was one of only two scores shot in the 60's on the day. Penn State's Katie Futcher fired a 67 to open her day. Futcher is one shot behind Dennison at five-under, 141 (67-74). The 68 is also the best round of Dennison's career and the second best round in Indiana history. Only Jennifer Gray's 67 at the 1998 NCAA Championships tops Dennison's Saturday round.
"Karen had an outstanding day," Carmichael said. "She shot 68 in her second round which was an excellent score."
Danah Ford is tied for fifth with Kent State's Veronique Drouin. Ford, an Indianapolis, Ind., native, fired a 147 (75-72) and is seven shots back of her teammate Dennison. The junior bettered her career bests for 18- and 36-holes with 72 and 147, respectively.
Senior Cara Stuckey is tied for 12th after shooting 150 (73-77). Junior Ambry Bishop is the fourth Hoosier in the top 20. The Franklin, Ind. product is tied for 17th after firing 152 (75-77). Hoosier freshman Molly Redrearn sits in a tie for 32nd after shooting 157 (78-79).
The Hoosiers and Dennison will look to pick up their second championship of the season on Sunday. The Lady Northern will continue at Finkbine Golf Course tomorrow morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Hoosiers will be paired with Kent State for the final round.
