IU Drops in Big Ten Opener (9-29-02)

University Park, Pa. - Penn State defeated Indiana in its Big Ten opener, 6-1, Sunday in University Park, Pa. The Hoosiers dropped to 2-7 as the Nitany Lions extended their record to 8-1.
The Nittany Lions dominated the game against the Hoosiers, out-shooting IU, 26-2, and recording 29 penalty corners.
Heather Conroy stole the show in the first half, recording eight points on three goals and two assists.
The scoring frenzy began only 2:40 into the game, as Conroy put one past goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek off of a corner from Jill Martz. The second goal was yet another connection between Conroy and Martz, but this time Martz put the goal in.
Conroy capped of the scoring for Penn State in the first half, recording her 13th goal of the season and the Nittany Lions fifth for the half.
Kayla Bashore scored the lone goal for the Hoosiers in the first half off of a one timed pass from Mallory Reabold at the 30:26 mark. This was the only shot IU got off in the half, as Bashore netted her third goal on the season. The Hoosiers entered intermission down, 5-1.
The Hoosiers slowed down the Nittany Lion attack in the second half, holding them to one goal. Pulkrabek made 10 stops on the afternoon.
"Penn State is a very strong team and all of the players are a threat," head coach Amy Robertson said. "Regardless of their offense, I was proud that we could still trust that we could attack. We moved the ball with confidence. We are building every game."
The Hoosiers are on the road on Wednesday, October 2, to face the University of Louisville at 7:00 p.m.
