Final Results of the Lady Northern
IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Indiana women's golf team went into Sunday's final round with a seven stroke lead, but could not hold on and finished in a tie for second with Penn State behind Kent State. The Hoosiers shot a 309 in the final round to bring their tournament score to 898. The score was identical to the one shot by IU at last season's Lady Northern. Kent State won the event by shooting a final round 299 and a 54-hole total of 895.
"We played as bad today as we did good yesterday," Indiana head coach Sam Carmichael said. "We started out poor, I think we only had one player break 40 on the front nine. We played well on the back, but just dug ourselves too deep on the front and weren't able to overcome that. Kent State played very well today to win."
Junior Karen Dennison finished second behind Penn State's Katie Futcher. The No. 1-ranked golfer according to Golfweek/Sagarin ratings came into the final round with a one stroke lead, but shot a 78 while her counterpart shot 70. Dennison's one-under, 218 is a career best round, better what she shot at the Wolverine Invitational two-weeks ago by one shot. Flutcher shot a eight-under, 211 in winning the event.
Junior Darah Ford continued her solid play, shooting a career best 224. Ford finished in a tie for sixth after shooting a 77 on Sunday.
The Hoosiers placed two more golfers in the top 15 with senior Cara Stuckey (T-12) and junior Ambry Bishop (T-15). Stuckey finished with a three-round total of 227 and shot 77 on Sunday. Bishop, who was tied for 17th after two rounds, shot a 77 on Sunday to finish with a 229.
Freshman Molly Redrearn rounded out the Hoosier lineup with a 237. The Racine, Wis. native tied for 39th after shooting a final round 80.
Indiana will again hit the links Oct. 7 and 8 when they play in the Shootout at the Legends. The Franklin, Ind. course is a par 72 with 6,076 yards and will be the host for the 54-hole event.
