Field Hockey Drops to 1-1 (9-03-02)

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team lost a close match to the Black Bears of Maine this morning, 2-1. The Hoosiers dropped 1-1 as UMaine extend their record to, 2-1.
The game started off with Indiana on the attacking end. In the first half alone Indiana had eight penalty corners to the Black Bear's three. Unfortunately, it was UMaine who was able to convert on a goal.
With 3:06 left in the first half Karyn Magno scored on a penalty corner from the top of the circle. Tara Bedard sent the ball up top to Amie Dubois who made a clean stick stop for Magno. Magno drove the ball into the right corner of the cage. The Hoosiers went into the half down, 1-0.
After intermission IU came out of the locker room ready for action. Only 42 seconds into the half, freshman Lesley Wiler scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Maine goalkeeper Jaye Lance blocked her initial shot, but Wiler followed up and put it in.
With 8:12 remaining in the contest, Tara Bedard recorded her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Kristy Ferran to put the Black Bears on top, 2-1.
The Hoosiers continued to fight, and with four minutes left Kayla Bashore drove the ball from the top of the circle as Maine goalkeeper Jaye Lance made a diving save from the ground. Lance recorded nine saves on the day.
Although the Hoosiers have improved drastically from last season, head coach Amy Robertson has confidence that they will improve even more.
"We need to recognize when and where we need to support," Robertson said. "We need to look to move the ball faster around our opponent, and we need to recognize and organize the zone defense better."
Maine head coach Terry Kix has only respect for the young, developing program that coach Robertson has brought to IU.
"I have great respect for Indiana," Kix said. "Coach Robertson's done a wonderful job with a young program. They are going to upset some people and they'll be a force to be reckoned with in the future."
The field hockey team faces the Cardinals of Ball State University on Friday, September 6, at 6:00 in Mellencamp Pavilion. Last season the Hoosiers defeated the Cardinals, 4-3, and the players are looking forward to the match up.
"We look a lot better than last year. I think that we are playing the best field hockey that we have played, unfortunately, today we could not finish our opportunities. Going into the weekend is encouraging because we play Ball State. Ball State was the one opponent that we beat last year. Looking onto this year is encouraging because we are going into the game having been playing well and with confidence."
