Hoosiers Fall To Michigan State
Bloomington, Ind. - After a shocking upset of No. 23 Ohio State on Jan. 12 the Hoosiers looked to continue the magic against the Michigan State Spartans in a tough Big Ten road battle. Despite a career performance by Allison Skapin, the Spartans worked to a 70-44 conference victory over IU.“We got outworked, outhustled, and outcoached,” said head coach Kathi Bennett. “They did everything better than us today. It’s either going to be a good thing or a very bad thing for us as a team.”
It was not the Hoosiers’ night, shooting just 15 percent from the field in the first half and 26 percent for the game. Skapin led all Indiana players with ten points, tying a career-high.
Defensively for Indiana, Angela Hawkins led the effort, grabbing nine boards and adding six points for the Hoosiers. Lisa Eckart added eight points for IU.
At halftime, Indiana trailed, 35-12 despite a strong start to the game. The Spartans jumped out to an early eight point lead five minutes into the first half but the Hoosiers pulled within four. From that point, Michigan State continued to extend its lead to 23 points before the break.
In the second half, Indiana changed up its defense, going to a full court press that managed to spark the Hoosiers the last 15 minutes of the contest. In the first half Indiana was outscored 35-12 but in the second half the Hoosiers played a more even game, scoring 32 points to Michigan State’s 35.
“Michigan State was ready and they played very good defense,” said Bennett. “We had no aggressiveness. We settled for threes. We shot poorly but we still continued to settle. We weren’t disciplined offensively and we didn’t have a post presence.”
Cyndi Valentin extends her free throws made streak to 17 straight, going two-for-two from the charity stripe.
The Hoosiers fall to 9-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten Conference.
Indiana wraps up its two-game Michigan road swing when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the Wolverines at 2 p.m. Sun., Jan. 19, then returns home to host Wisconsin and Michigan State.
