The No. 14/16 (AP/Coaches) Indiana Hoosiers (14-3, 4-1) embark upon their first true four-game road trip since 1969-70 when they visit Purdue on Jan. 25 at 4:37 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN Plus Regional (Tom Hamilton and Greg Kelser) and can also be heard statewide on the IU Radio Network (Don Fischer, Todd Leary and Joe Smith.IU wrapped up a three-game homestand with a 69-51 victory over Ohio State on Jan. 21. With National Freshman of the Year candidate Bracey Wright (back injury) and forward Jeff Newton and center George Leach (foul trouble) on the bench, freshman Marshall Strickland came off the bench to tie his career-high with 15 points. Strickland led four Hoosiers in double figures.
The Purdue game opens a four-game road trip that features visits to three of the top 33 programs in the Jan. 22 collegerpi.com poll - 9. Louisville (Feb. 1, CBS), 27. Purdue (Jan. 25, ESPN Plus Regional) and 33. Michigan State (Jan. 28, ESPN). In head coach Mike Davis' tenure, IU has had two three-game road trips, posting a 2-1 record each time.
National Freshman of the Year candidate Bracey Wright has missed the last three games due to a reoccurring back injury that has caused the irritation of a nerve. He is being treated and evaluated by the Hoosier medical staff on a game-by-game basis.
Indiana puts a five-game series winning streak on the line Saturday in West Lafayette.
Senior forward Jeff Newton has scored in double figures in 14 of the 17 games this season, and Indiana is 31-7 all-time when the 6-9 Newton scores at least 10 points.
In Wright's absence, freshman Marshall Strickland and junior A.J. Moye have picked up their production. Strickland is averaging 11 points per game in his last three contests, while Moye had a season-high 13 points, eight rebounds and 36 minutes played against Ohio State.
Senior CLASS and Wooden Award candidate Tom Coverdale needs nine points to pass Butch Joyner for 35th on the all-time IU scoring list and four three-pointers to pass Damon Bailey for third.
