Hoosiers Top Hartwick 10-8

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana University women's water polo team opened its 2003 campaign with a 10-8 win over No. 16 Hartwick Saturday, at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The 14th-ranked Hoosiers took a commanding lead in the half, as Hoosier All-American and team captain, Kristin Stanford, netted all four of her goals in the first half, helping IU to a 8-2 lead at halftime.
The six-goal margin was not safe however, as Hartwick came blazing out of halftime and netted three goals with just 1:16 expired in the third quarter. The defensive meltdown caused Indiana head coach Barry King to quickly call for a timeout to regroup his Hoosiers.
Smarter offensive sets and the ability to swim back faster on the counterattacks, enabled Indiana to manage the game the way the Hoosiers wanted to. Junior Melissa Pietras scored at the 3:24 mark of the third quarter to push the Indiana lead to 9-5, which also ended a 4:45 scoring drought for the Hoosiers.
Senior Ginger Wang displayed one of the finest all-around competitive games in her Hoosier career, netting both of the two shots she took, as well as recording a career-high five steals.
"Ginger played a really nice game for us today," said King. "She earned her time at the end of last year and really showed us that she could be a player for us this year. Her performance today is one that we expect out of her."
Wang admits that her performance stemmed solely from an increase in confidence.
"I think I came in mentally prepared today and just confident in myself and the team," said Wang. "I feel I have become smarter on the defensive side of the ball, but really it's just all about confidence."
The Hoosiers were led by Stanford with four goals, followed by Wang's two. Sophomores Krista Peterson and Sharna Nelson, along with Pietras and freshman Bridget McKeon, all scored once for Indiana.
Saturday morning's contest marked the first time Indiana and Hartwick had ever met.
After beginning last year with an 0-6 record, King notes that the season-opening win is a nice one to have.
"It was nice to see us come out and play with excitement and get the win," King said. "I thought we played well, but it's still early and we have a lot to work on."
The Hoosiers will head back to the pool at 4:00 p.m. to take on No. 16, yet No. 1 rival, Michigan. The game will mark the first time former Indiana assistant Matt Anderson and current Michigan head coach will face the Hoosiers.
IU has not defeated the Wolverines since Michigan earned varsity status in 2001. Currently, Michigan holds a 9-0-1 advantage over Indiana, with four of those 10 games having gone into overtime.
