IU Falls to Michigan, 12-6

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - After an intense victory over Hartwick earlier in the day, the Indiana women's water polo team fell to its rival Michigan in their home pool at the Canham Natatorim Saturday afternoon.
The Hoosiers (1-1) fell to the Wolverines 12-6, which leaves Indiana winless against Michigan in the past 11 contests. The six-point difference tied the largest deficit in the Indiana/Michigan rivalry. IU dropped an 8-2 decision against the Wolverines back in April of 2001.
Of Indiana's top three returning players-senior Kristin Stanford and sophomores Sharna Nelson and Krista Peterson-only one goal was scored (Stanford) on 12 shots between the trio. Junior Melissa Pietras led the Hoosiers with two goals on three shots, while freshmen Bridget McKeon, Emily Schmitt and Clare Meadows each netted a goal.
"We came out very flat in the first half, which was disappointing," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "There were a couple of things that just didn't go our way. If you take those away, we're right there in the game."
Michigan (1-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and extended its lead to 11-3 at the end of the third. IU, who scored on just six of 29 shots against Michigan, outscored the Wolverines 3-1 in the final stanza, but could not close in enough on the Maize and Blue.
IU takes to the pool one last time this evening, facing Michigan State in exhibition competition. The Spartans are the No. 1 ranked club team in the nation. Due to Michigan State not holding varsity status, both the outcome and statistics will not count towards Indiana's season totals.
