Hoosiers Top No. 7 San Jose State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana University women's water polo team concluded the 2003 Michigan Invitational Sunday, topping No. 7 San Jose State 10-8, and moving to 2-1 on the year, as the Hoosiers' senior All-American Kristin Stanford tied the school record with six goals.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has now accomplished the six-goal mark three times in her career and is the school's all-time scoring leader with 184 goals.
The win for the No. 14 Hoosiers came on the heels of a disappointing performance against Michigan Saturday night, in which Indiana lacked intensity and leadership in the pool. That was not the case on Sunday, as each player in a crimson suit stepped up and completed the task at hand.
"This was a tremendous team effort and I couldn't be more happy right now," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "I thought we played excellent defense today and we really had some key players step up."
The key players King eluded to are those of Stanford, sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner, Ginger Wang and Kristy Streefkerk.
Both Streefkerk and Wang were assigned to San Jose State's top-two scorers and were able to shut them down defensively.
"Streef and Ginger really came through big for us today," King said. "They were given their assignments and carried them out for us."
Goldner set a career-high in shots attempted as she stopped eight of the 24 shots she looked at. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native also had quite the presence in the goal, forcing the Spartans' offense to shoot cross-cage and into the corners, with the majority bouncing off the bars.
Sophomore Krista Peterson got back into her rhythm as the Portland, Ore., native recorded three goals on five shots, including two steals and one assist. Within the first minute of the game, Peterson drew an exclusion and forced a 4-meter foul to be called, both leading to Hoosier goals.
Stanford netted her fifth goal of the day with 0:03 left in the first half, landing a 10-meter bomb from the middle of the pool. Her goal took the Hoosiers into halftime with a 6-5 lead.
In the second half, Indiana steadied and remained in control of the game for the two remaining quarters. Senior Jamie Marley scored her lone shot on a 4-meter foul to push the lead to 7-5 in the third.
After an SJSU goal, Stanford netted her final goal at the 1:00 mark, taking Indiana into the final stanza, leading 8-6.
Peterson scored the final two Hoosier goals in the fourth, which gave the Hoosiers their first victory against the Spartans in four games.
