Hoosiers Fall to Iowa, 78-62

Iowa City, Iowa -Despite jumping out to an eight-point lead and a stellar performance by senior point guard Kristen Bodine, the Indiana women’s basketball team dropped a 78-62 decision to the Iowa Hawkeyes (11-7, 3-4). The Hoosiers (9-9, 2-6) have lost their last five straight games and have yet to win on the road this season.
Seniors Jill Hartman and Kristen Bodine stepped up when teammates Jenny DeMuth and Cyndi Valentin combined for only 2-of-18 from the field.
“Today I actually thought our offense was better than it has been,” stated head coach Kathi Bennett. “We hustled and we ran the floor hard but they just beat us with their guards.”
The Hoosiers were led by Bodine who contributed an Indiana career-high 21 points to go along with six assists. Bodine scored her career high 23 points when she played at Butler in 2000. Senior guard Jill Hartman came off the bench to score a season-high 15 points. Senior forward Lisa Eckart led Indiana in rebounds with nine, chipping in nine points.
Indiana came out strong in the first half, holding Iowa without a field goal for the first 6:36 of the game, jumping out to an 11-3 advantage. The Hoosiers couldn't carry that early success over into the second half as the Hawkeyes put the game away early in the second half with an 11-2 run. Iowa’s 78 points is the most points that the Hoosiers have allowed since a 103-95 victory over Ball State in double overtime on Nov. 23, 2002.
At the half, the Hoosiers trailed the Hawkeyes 36-33. Hartman and Bodine dominated the first half offensive attack for Indiana. Hartman led with eleven points and was one for two from the three-point line. Bodine contributed 10 points and four assists to the Hoosiers offensive efforts. In only seven minutes of play in the first half, Jamie Gathing added four points and four rebounds.
“We’ve got to have more confidence," said Bennett. "It’s hard when you’re not winning, but we’ve got to find ways to get wins.”
The Hoosiers will travel to University Park, Pa. to take on the 15th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten match-up. Indiana won the last match-up, 75-72, between the two schools in the championship game of last season's Big Ten tournament.
