Wright Earns Big Ten POW Honors

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana freshman guard Bracey Wright is the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 4. The Hoosiers' National Freshman of the Year candidate shares the league's top weekly honor with Wisconsin's Devin Harris. Wright, who was also the Dec. 2 Big Ten Player of the Week, becomes the first league freshman since Indiana's Alan Henderson (1991-92) to earn the Big Ten's top weekly honor on multiple occasions. In fact, Wright is the sixth Big Ten freshman and fourth Indiana rookie to achieve this feat - Wright, Henderson, Jay Edwards (1987-88), Steve Alford (1983-84), Michigan State's Scott Skiles (1982-83), and Ohio State's Jim Jackson (1989-90) each won Big Ten Player of the Week honors more than once in their first year.Wright is the fourth-leading freshman scorer in the country (19.2 ppg) and has led Indiana in scoring each of the last three games and six times this season. He tied his career-high with 31 points at Ball State on Dec. 31, scoring 21 of those 31 in the second half. He scored 18 of the Hoosiers' first 23 points in the second half, as IU extended its lead from one point to 11.
Wright has opened his collegiate career with 12 straight double figure scoring games, the best debut by an IU freshman since Calbert Cheaney had 13 straight to open the 1989-90 campaign. The 12-game double figure scoring streak ties Jared Jeffries (2000-01) for the fourth-best such performance by an IU freshman in school history.
Wright closed the week with a team-high 17 points against Charlotte. In the two games, he averaged 24.5 points while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line.
