Hoosiers Beat Badgers, 3-0 (10-10-03)

MADISON, Wis. - On Friday night in Madison, Wis., the Indiana men's soccer team was looking to capture back-to-back wins for the first time this season and remain unbeaten in Big Ten Conference play. And they did just that. The Hoosiers defeated the Badgers, 3-0, and improved to 4-3-4 overall and 2-0-1 in league play. Wisconsin slipped to 7-7-0 and 1-2-0 in the Big Ten.
"I thought we finally got some of the bad breaks we've been getting to go our way tonight," Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "I didn't think we played very well defensively and that had been our strength. We gave up too many scoring opportunities to them and missed on some of our own. We'll need to address that and be sharp for our next game."
In the 19th minute, the host Badgers were dealt a huge blow. Wisconsin's leading scorer, Jed Hohlbein was given a red card after a hard foul on Hoosier defender Drew Moor, forcing UW to play a man down the rest of the way.
Indiana got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Pat Yates booted the ball into the far left side of the goal, giving IU a 1-0 advantage. Senior midfielder Drew Shinabarger assisted on the play.
The Hoosiers struck again less than a minute into the second half. After a Wisconsin foul, junior forward Ned Grabavoy attempted the free kick from the right side. As the ball traveled toward the goal, freshman defender Julian Dieterle got his foot on it and into the left corner of the goal. It was the first goal of Dieterle's IU career.
Wisconsin continued to fight and even threatened in the few next minutes. The Badgers' Phil Doeh had a shot attempt hit off the post. At the 49-minute mark, Wisconsin attempted two shots during a scramble in the box. An attempted shot by David Martinez was saved by IU midfielder Danny O'Rourke in front of the goal. Junior goalkeeper Jay Nolly knocked down a follow shot.
Grabavoy scored his sixth goal of the season at the 78:03 mark. Pat Yates played a nice ball to the right side of the field, and freshman Jacob Peterson was able to run it down. Peterson fed Grabavoy the ball and he scored it from 12-yards out and into lower right corner. The junior co-captain leads the Hoosiers with 16 points this season.
The Badgers had 12 shots in the game, but IU was able to hold them scoreless. The Hoosiers also broke a string of four straight shutouts for Wisconsin.
Nolly collected four saves as he notched his third shutout of the season.
Indiana continues its Big Ten road trip on Sunday when it plays at Northwestern. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the Wildcats' Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill.
