Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team fell to Michigan 30-23, 30-22, 30-23 Friday evening at University Gym. IU falls to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in the Big Ten while Michigan improves to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference."Michigan was a very good team tonight," said Weismiller. "For us, we need to step it up. I think the Big Ten is much better now than it was at the beginning of preseason. We need to skill-wise, just get a little bit better in terms of having players firing at the same time."
Junior Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) finished with a match-high 14 kills, the 27th consecutive match she has reached the 10 kill mark, while senior Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) added 12 kills. Seeing extensive action, sophomore Mandy Eberle (Sussex, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) participated in two games, drilling three kills with one block solo and one block assist. Freshman Katy Jo Mroski (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) played in a season-high two games, adding one block assist.
"Coming in, I try to stay excited, throw some energy onto the court and bring some fire to the team," said Eberle. "I try to get everyone psyched up to get a kill, get a pass and make their serves."
After playing to 5-5, 10-10 and 15-15 deadlocks, the Wolverines took control of the opening game with a five-point run, making it 22-17. The Hoosiers closed the gap to 25-23, but Michigan used another five-point run to put IU away, 30-23.
U-M took the opener despite the impressive play of Archibald, who finished with a game-high eight kills.
The Hoosiers fell behind early in game two before rallying to cut the Michigan lead to 12-10. IU stayed within four points until the Wolverines used a 6-2 run to build a 24-16 lead. The teams split the final 12 points, giving U-M the 30-22 victory and 2-0 lead in the match.
Brewer led the way for the Hoosiers with six kills in the game.
In game three, Indiana started off quickly, holding a 10-9 advantage. Michigan responded, building a 19-14 lead. In an effort to extend the match, the Hoosiers rallied, scoring six of the next seven points and tying the match at 20-20. But the Wolverines were too much down the stretch, scoring 10 of the game's final 13 points on their way to the victory.
The Hoosiers return to the court Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against No. 16 Michigan State at University Gym.
"They (Michigan State) are definitely good," said Weismiller. "We just have to be better prepared. We have to be able to step up and get some points. That is the key right now, to get our side of the court going."
