Brewer Breaks Record, Hoosiers Fall

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Despite a strong comeback attempt, the Indiana volleyball team fell to intrastate rival Purdue 30-28, 30-26, 21-30, 30-28. IU drops to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in Big Ten play while the Boilermakers improve to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.&#xWe came back and pushed and played hard, but we just let up early in the match," said Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller. "That's the one thing that is on our side of the net which we can control. We need to come back and fix that."
Melissa Brewer etched her name into the Hoosier record books, recording seven block assists, becoming the Indiana all-time leader with 407 in her career. She broke current IU assistant coach Cydryce Carter's record of 405. The senior also added a match-high 17 kills, hitting .389 in the match.
&#xThat is quite an accomplishment," said Weismiller of Brewer's record. "When you look at how good Cydryce Carter was, that's a hard record to break. She put a lot of time and effort into it, and she has gotten better and better. She had such a great night and hopefully we can all pick it up around her."
Purdue opened the match scoring the first seven points before the Hoosiers fired back with a 9-2 run to even game one at 9-9. Brewer accounted for five of the IU points with three kills and two block assists during the run. The Boilermakers responded with a run of their own to take a 17-13, but Indiana responded again. An Archibald kill started a 5-0 run which was capped by Brewer's fourth kill of the game, giving the Hoosiers their first lead of the match at 18-17.
With IU holding a 24-22 lead, Purdue ran off the next four points to take a 26-24 lead. However, after a Weismiller timeout, Indiana stormed back with three unanswered points for a 27-26 lead. Once again, Purdue fought back, scoring four of the game's final five points for the 30-28 victory.
Brewer finished with six kills, hitting .667, and four block assists in a game featuring 11 ties and six lead changes.
The two teams played to a 6-6 tie in the early-going of game two before the Boilermakers scored seven of the next eight points, good for a 13-7 advantage. Purdue built its lead to 28-18 when the Hoosiers used a six-point run, including two kills from Monique Pritz, to cut the lead to 28-24. Four points was as close as IU would get as the Boilermakers closed the game out, 30-26 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the game, Brewer picked up her eighth kill of the match, moving into third place on the Hoosiers all-time list with 1,382 career kills.
Indiana jumped out to a commanding 10-2 lead in game three behind the power of two Katie Pollom kills and two Pollom block assists. The Hoosiers maintained their lead at 18-14 when Pollom, Christina Archibald, Brewer and Ashley White drilled four consecutive kills in a 5-0 IU run, giving Indiana an insurmountable 23-14 lead. The teams split the final 14 points of the game as the Hoosiers cruised to a 30-21 victory, extending the match to a fourth game.
Pollom finished with a game-high seven kills on eight attempts while Archibald added five kills. IU hit .378 as a team in the game, holding the Boilermakers to a -.028 hitting percentage.
After falling behind 6-2 in the fourth game, Brewer brought Indiana back with three straight kills, knotting the game at 6-6. Purdue opened up a 13-10 lead with a 7-4 run and held a 17-14 lead before the Hoosiers stormed back behind back-to-back kills from Archibald to tie the game at 17-17.
Following two lead changes and two ties, the Boilermakers grabbed a 22-20 lead. IU recovered, scoring four of the next six points, but Purdue halted the run, answering with the next two points for a 26-24 lead. Brewer cut the deficit to 28-27 with a service ace, and Pollom kept the Hoosiers alive with a block solo, making it 29-28. However, the Boilermakers closed out the game the following point, winning the match, 3-1.
Pollom ended the evening with 12 kills and four block assists while Beth Heimann finished with a season and career-high 22 digs. Victoria Zimmerman distributed 55 assists with three digs and three block assists.
Up next, the Hoosiers host #23 Wisconsin at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at University Gym.
