Bloomington, Ind. – Although the Indiana women’s tennis team is in the midst of its fall tournament season, the Hoosiers took time to participate in the 4th annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer on Saturday Sept. 27.
This is the fourth-straight year that the IU tennis team has participated in the Hoosiers Outrun Cancer event. One person who has been touched closely with this disease is Indiana senior Karie Schlukebir. She has been battling cancer for the last five years, and in support of Schlukebir, the team joined her in the 5K run/walk.
“ Having the team run the event with me every year is a wonderful feeling,” Schlukebir said. “I know that they have supported me through my treatments, and they still support me by running this event. It is something that I would love to see the team continue to do when I am no longer playing tennis at Indiana. I know by being out there, they see just how many people cancer affects, and hopefully have become more knowledgeable and open-eyed to the range of people effected.”
The 5 K run/walk event was founded in 2000 as a fund raising event of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, with all proceeds benefiting the hospital's Olcott Center for Cancer Education.
Each year, over 2,000 people participate, and 200 volunteers work together to make the run/walk a meaningful, fun, and successful event. Since 2000, over $300,000 has been raised to support cancer patients, their families, and caregivers.
