IU Loses Heartbreaker To Northwestern

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team lost a heartbreaker 3-2 to Northwestern on Friday, Oct. 17. Indiana now moves to 7-5, 0-4 in the Big Ten, while Northwestern improves to 6-7, 1-4 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers were down 2-0 at halftime after Northwestern goals by Holly Palin and Candice Cooper. Indiana then went down 3-0 as Northwestern scored just eight minutes into the second half off a goal by Megan Sieberg.
The Hoosiers then got on the board on a goal by sophomore Lesley Wiler and assist by freshman Lydia Schrott just over 12 minutes into the second half. Freshman Jodi Murphy then added another goal for the Hoosiers. The Indiana rally fell just short as the game ended on a blocked Indiana penalty corner.
Even with the loss, head coach Amy Robertson was pleased with the way the team played and sees positives coming from game.
"The team played amazing in the second half," Robertson said. "We had several opportunities that we just missed. Northwestern had a tough defense and was hungry to win. I have never seen my players play at the level in which they did today. I think this is a big step forward for this team."
Indiana had seven penalty corners, one more than Northwestern. Both teams got off 11 shots, with Indiana having 10 in the second half.
Indiana junior goalkeeper Katie Kanara made four saves, while Northwestern goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg made two.
The Hoosiers next play on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at Mellencamp Pavilion when they take on No. 18 California-Berkeley. Northwestern will be playing California-Berkeley on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at Mellencamp Pavilion.
