Four Hoosiers Advance in ITA Midwest Regionals

East Lansing, Mich.  It was a successful opening day for the Indiana University mens tennis team during the qualifying singles rounds at the ITA Midwest Championships on Thursday, Oct. 23. From the Indiana lineup, four out of five Hoosiers advanced to the round of 32. Juniors Tom Bagnato, Ryan McCarthy, sophomore Neil Kenner and freshman David Bubenicek each had good outings on Thursday against their opponents.

Bagnato advanced after defeating a No. 9 seed, Michael Flowers of Michigan State, 6-3,6-3. McCarthy came back after being down in the first match and defeated the No. 3 seed Justin Kates from WMU,4-6,6-3,6-4. Kenner also advanced after defeating Justin Yeager of Xavier, 6-2-,6-1 and Bubenicek moved on after downing Carlos Gonzalez of IPFW, 6-1,6-2.

Sophomore John Stone also competed in singles, but fell to Robert Kotroczo of DePaul, 6-3, 6-4.

The round of 32 will begin tomorrow with the first matches set for 8:00 a.m.
