Hoosiers Fall at Illinois

Box ScoreChampaign, Ill. - In search of an upset of the top team in the Big Ten, the Indiana volleyball team came up short against Illinois, falling in four games 30-13, 27-30, 30-21, 30-16. The Hoosiers are now 2-8 in the Big Ten and 9-12 overall, while the U of I improves to a league-best 8-2 and 17-3 overall.
Junior Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) closed out the match with 13 kills, a .357 hitting percentage, one block solo and five block assists, and junior Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) led the squad with 15 kills to go along with her six digs, one block solo and four block assists.
Additionally, Tasha Arsenych (Plano, Texas/East) got the starting nod at setter. In her first career start, the freshman displayed great poise and leadership, distributing 42 assists.
Pollom paced the Hoosiers in game one, pounding three kills and one block assist, but the Fighting Illini were too much, posting a 30-13 victory. IU trailed 11-7 before the Illini closed out the game with a 19-6 run. Senior Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) added three kills and three digs in the game.
The Hoosiers stormed out of the gates in game two, grabbing a 10-7 lead. IU increased its lead to 13-8, its largest lead of the match, after block solos by Brewer and Archibald.
Illinois closed the gap to one point at 16-15, but Pollom accounted for the next four Hoosier points (three kills and one block assist) increasing the Indiana lead to 20-16. After the Illini sliced the deficit to one point for the fourth time in the game at 22-21, sophomore Ashley White (St.Charles, Ill./East), senior Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East) and Archibald each nailed two kills down the stretch to lead IU to the 30-27 victory.
In the game, Pollom finished with seven kills on 10 attempts and Archibald terminated five kills. The Hoosiers hit .390 as a team in game two.
Indiana could not sustain an offensive attack in game three, dropping the game, 30-21. Archibald led both teams with seven kills in the game, giving her 13 in the match, marking the 32nd consecutive match she has recorded at least 10 kills.
The teams split the first eight points of game four before the Fighting Illini reeled off eight of the next 11 points for an 11-7 lead. After a Weismiller time out, a block from Pollom and Arsenych along with a Pollom kill cut the Illini lead to 11-9, but the Hoosiers would not get any closer. Illinois rattled off the next eight points and never looked back, winning the game, 30-16, and the match, 3-1.
Up next, IU travels to Michigan State for a matchup against the nationally-ranked Spartans on Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m. The Hoosiers then complete the Michigan road swing against Michigan on Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m.
